The company Solar Roadways received a grant of $ 100,000 from the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) to build a prototype solar panel, from which in future will carry coverage of roads instead of asphalt. “Sunny” way of the future will consist of glass solar panels, measuring 3,6 x 3,6 meters and cost $ 6900. In a bright sunny day, each such panel will issue 7,6 kW / h of electric energy, and one mile of the quad-highway could provide electricity for 500 homes. In addition to power generation travelers are equipped with solar panels and LED-backlit special control system. With their help on the road will be denoted by markings and display various information for drivers, warning to reduce speed in dangerous areas.
Solar panel roads can also be equipped with a heating system for the protection of the coating of snow and ice.
